Uncovering researcher behaviour: a package of resources from Oxford Brookes and Coventry Pathfinders

Following on from the Oxford Brookes ‘Making Sense’/ Coventry (O2OA) Pathfinder workshop in May, a neat package of resources are now available to institutions who are interested in analysing  researcher behaviour around OA and using it as a foundation for how OA is implemented across their institution.

Intervention Mapping

Intervention approaches teach us that to make real changes, approaches need to address the underlying problems. This involves understanding what the difficulties are (from the user perspective), what type of change is needed, and what solution will be most useful. The aim is to work with the users to acknowledge how they may engage with something, and strategically help overcome barriers.

This simplified approach draws on intervention development techniques to give research support staff tools to better understand the areas they are needing to change

CIAO – Collaborative Institutional Assessment of Open Access

CIAO is a benchmarking tool for assessing institutional readiness for OA compliance

MIAO – My Individual Assessment of Open Access

MIAO is a self-assessment tool aimed at researchers so that they can gauge for themselves what they know about OA and how their institution is able to support them.

Interview Questions- Nottingham Trent University

Nottingham Trent interviewed over 50 researchers across the institution in order to give them some insights into how researchers viewed and were responding to OA funder mandates

Interview analysis- Nottingham Trent University

Results from the research behaviour analysis were coded in order to identify trends, which could be built on through enhanced advocacy work.

This poster based on the stages of the research lifecycle (identify new research area, produce proposal, bid for funding…) and suggests questions to think about and tools and resources to support researchers in preparing for, and taking advantage of, open access to research.
